I headed to "Merthyr Tydfil" for two reasons: I wanted to know what an old Welsh mining town looked like - one that might even have been the very town my grandfather hailed from prior to his adventures in the USA. And I wanted some mud I could fling with glee in the face of the history revisionists who claim that steam-pwered railways originated somewhere other than Wales.
