Moonlit Rail ™

Windsor Castle

Hampton Court SE/Wales/Liverpool Canterbury

I had planned my holiday to the United Kingdom around a travel schedule that included ten days in downtown London, followed by ten days (seven in Britain and three in Ireland) by way of an unlimited rail pass. I spent my first rail-enabled day visiting three sites just outside of London: Windsor Castle, Canterbury Cathedral, and Dover. (Yes, my self-imposed schedule left little time for error.) These are the photographs of Windsor Castle.

Windsor Castle was not quite the castle I had envisioned. My concept of a "castle," you see, is something medieval - dimly lit stone-walled corridors, drafts blowing through darkened archways, and at least a moat outside. I picture scenes from Olivier's Hamlet, and many fond memories of visits to Hammond Castle here in the northeast US. The interior of Windsor Castle was just a bit too 19th-century for my taste.
