Incomplete ROW

Miscellaneous Massachusetts Central

Initial portions of the Massachusetts Central that traversed the Swift River Valley (much of which, today, is covered by the Quabbin Reservoir and adjacent watershed) were abandoned after having been nearly completed.

Management evidently felt that the prospects for finding paying customers along the route of the Ware River through Ware and into Bondsville were sufficiently greater than the prospects through the Swift River Valley that a complete abandonment of work-to-date was warranted — a curiously bold move considering the fragile state of their funding.

These modest photographic sequences were taken in and around the eastern side of the Quabbin.
